GULF SHORES, Ala. (Sep. 16, 2014) – The Hangout, in partnership with Alabama Gulf Seafood, will host the 7th Annual Oyster Cook-Off & Craft Beer Weekend on November 7–9th. The Oyster Cook-Off competition takes place on Saturday afternoon November 8th when 50+ chefs will compete in three categories for the best oyster, and patrons will have the chance to taste them all.
The festivities begin on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. with the debut of the Oyster Cook-Off Craft Beer Festival presented by AL.com. Advance tickets (just $25 at hangoutcookoff.com) include beer from all participating breweries and great live music. Over 60+ beers from 25+ breweries will be featured.
Saturday’s Cook-Off will feature live music, family activities and delicious Alabama Gulf oysters prepared by chefs from across the Southeast. Patrons can participate in cooking demonstrations, be a judge in the Bloody Mary Invitational and watch top chefs live in action. Tasting tickets will be available for purchase to sample the oysters, beer, wine, moonshine and champagne. Admission for Saturday’s Cook-Off is free to the public.
This year’s Oyster Cook-off includes an extra day of indulgence with our Sunday Brunch and Bloody Mary’s on November 9th. The brunch costs $25 (only $10 for kids 12 and under).

Alabama’s oyster season generally extends from October to April each year with the state leading the nation in oyster processing.
Some of the 70+ celebrity chefs/judges, local legends and regional restaurants participating this year include Tyler Williams (Eater’s Chef of the Year); Ryan Prewitt of Peché (2014 James Beard Best Chef South; New Orleans, La.); Food 101 (Atlanta, Ga.); 404 Kitchen (Nashville, Tenn.); Ocean (Birmingham Ala.); 1908 Provision (Jackson, Miss.); Martie Duncan (Next Food Network Star); The Gulf, and Flora-Bama Yacht Club, among others.
Categories at the event include Rockefeller, Gulf Coast Cajun and Raw, all of which will be evaluated by a panel of judges on a point system ranking presentation, flavor and creativity.
Judges will be guided through the evaluation process by the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS), a third party that will oversee the event’s judging. This marks the first year the Oyster Cook-Off has partnered with KCBS. Plus, attendees have the chance to declare their favorite for the AL.com People’s Choice award.
Participating chefs and restaurants have the chance to win a total of $20,000 in cash and prizes, including 2015 Hangout Music Festival tickets, Big Green Eggs and free entries into the 2015 Oyster Cook-Off.

Established by Alabama Governor Robert Bentley by executive order signed in March of 2011, the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission (ASMC) was created to help provide advice, oversight, management and encouragement to the marketing of Alabama seafood. Led by Chris Blankenship, director of the Alabama Marine Resource Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the ASMC is comprised of volunteer members appointed by the Governor that includes fishermen, processors, charter boat operators, retailers, restaurant owners and others directly and indirectly related to the Alabama seafood industry.
