Alabama Gulf Seafood that your business processes: Fish, Shrimp and Crab

Where were you born and raised?

Tacoma, Washington. My father was in the service. We have lived many places around the United States and a few countries overseas.

How did you come to work in Alabama’s seafood industry?

Boja’s is a family-owned business. In 1991, I joined the company in sales.

What types of seafood do you process/handle?

We process value-added seafood products such as stuffed crab, shrimp, and flounder. We also produce a domestic breaded shrimp and blue crab claws.

What does your typical workday involve?

When I am not traveling visiting customers, like most everyone in today’s world, I start my day answering emails that came in overnight. That normally tells me what I will do that day. On this day, I started working on a new international customer that wanted product Air Freighted to them. I manage brokers and support them the best way I can. I still work in the field and it is the job I like to do the most. Meeting and learning about the customer is very important; you really learn the most that way. Showing support to my brokers or the distributors we have around the United States is also a very important part of my job. I also work with production to get new items together for our customers. Over the last 39 years, we have tried to be flexible and bend to the needs of our customer base.

What makes your company/organization stand out within Alabama’s seafood industry?

Being a small business, we have always tried to give our customers a quality product at a reasonable cost. We strive to have excellent customer service, whether that be from us directly or our brokers.

What’s your favorite seafood dish to serve up for yourself and your family?

I love a good gumbo or a she-crab soup.

What makes Alabama Gulf Seafood special?

The people! Seafood is not like beef, pork or chicken. All the other proteins are pinned in a yard just waiting for someone’s table. Seafood takes added skills to find and catch the products, whether it is shrimp, crab or fish. It takes a committed individual to leave their homes and go out for days on end, no matter the weather, and look for their product. Sometimes you may end up with a great bounty—other days, nothing. As a processor of what the Alabama fisherman catch, we are thankful for their commitment.

What are your favorite hobbies?

I love to travel and I’m lucky I can do that with my job and for fun. I enjoy my gym, and I am just starting to learn to play golf. We will see how that goes.

What is your favorite band/musician?

I love Pink! I just saw her in concert in Birmingham. She is fantastic.

If you didn’t work in the Alabama seafood industry, what line of work would you pursue?

A criminal lawyer.
