Announcing Chef Contenders for 10th Annual Hangout Oyster Cook-Off

Has it really been a decade already? Time flies when you’re eating fresh Gulf oysters, it seems.

In less than two months, the 10th annual Hangout Oyster Cook-Off & Craft Beer Weekend will be returning to The Hangout in Gulf Shores. If you’re around November 3-4, you probably won’t find a better party this side of New Year’s Eve.

Of course, there’ll be lots of craft beer, live music, and other activities throughout the weekend. But the main event will be a seafood showdown like no other as chefs from all over the Gulf gather together and fire up their grills for dozens and dozens of fresh Gulf oysters.

Here’s how it breaks down. Each team will compete in at least two of three categories: Rockefeller, Cajun, and create your own raw oyster dish. From there, a panel of expert foodies will taste-test each oyster creation based on presentation, flavor, and creativity to determine the Top 5 oysters in each category.

Additionally, a Chef’s Choice Award will be handed out, and audience participation (by way of tasting tickets used to purchase oysters throughout the day) will help determine the Audience Favorite.

More than $5000 in cash and prizes will be handed out over the weekend, including prize money for the shucking champions and the winner of the best booth.

Nearly 40 chefs have already been selected to compete in this year’s competition, including several friends of Alabama Gulf Seafood. So far, 19 chefs from Alabama (including James Beard Award nominees, television personalities, and more) have been chosen to compete with culinary masterminds from North Carolina to Texas.
