Chris Nelson of Bon Secour Fisheries named Supplier of the Year

Chris Nelson of Bon Secour Fisheries has been named the 2013 Supplier of the Year. He received the honor tonight at the Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Alliance’s 13th Annual Hospitality Stars of Alabama Awards at the Renaissance Battle House Hotel and Spa in Mobile. These awards recognize outstanding performance, commitment, and achievements in the lodging, tourism, and restaurant industry.

“On behalf of our company and all of its employees, and the tradition that we have here, I’m tremendously honored to receive this prestigious award. We look forward to continuing another hundred-plus-year relationship with our customers in the restaurant industry,” said Nelson.

Alabama Marine Resources Director and Program Administrator of the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission Chris Blankenship nominated Nelson. Of the nomination, Blankenship said:

“Chris Nelson and his family business, Bon Secour Fisheries, have been very instrumental in broadening the supply chain for Alabama Gulf Seafood. They have become the premier supplier of fresh and frozen seafood from Coastal Alabama. They also ship seafood to anywhere in the U.S. to fill orders. Recently, they have implemented delivery of fresh Gulf oysters to the new Wintzell’s Oyster House locations in Pittsburgh, Pa.”

He continued: “Bon Secour Fisheries, and Chris Nelson in particular, work hard to procure oysters, shrimp and other seafood to process and pack in their facility in coastal Baldwin County. Bon Secour has earned a reputation for providing quality seafood that is delivered promptly and on a schedule to meet the demands of the restaurants and retail customers.”

Blankenship also noted Nelson’s extensive history of voluntary service to the seafood industry, which extends well beyond the borders of Baldwin County.

“Nelson also works with many organizations to improve the position of the seafood industry in Alabama. He is a member of the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference, the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission, the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Alabama Shellfish Aquaculture Review Board, the Coastal Recovery Commission, the Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce, the Mobile Chamber of Commerce Seafood Task Force, the Gulf Oyster Industry Council as well as the chairman of the Gulf Coast Seafood Marketing Coalition.”

Bon Secour Fisheries, Inc. is a leading seafood processor and wholesale distributor in Alabama with more than 100 years of history. This family-owned-and-operated business was founded in 1896 by Danish immigrant Frank Nelson on Oyster Bay. Today, Chris Nelson and his brothers John Andrew and David carry on the tradition. What was once a small oyster business is now a modern seafood processing plant that packs the famous Nelson’s Brand Oysters and Bon Secour Brand Shrimp plus a variety of other seafood items from its 30,000 square-foot plant on Bon Secour River.

About the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission

Established by Alabama Governor Robert Bentley by executive order signed in March of 2011, the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission (ASMC) was created to help provide advice, oversight, management and encouragement to the marketing of Alabama seafood. Led by Chris Blankenship, director of the Alabama Marine Resource Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the ASMC is comprised of volunteer members appointed by the Governor that includes fishermen, processors, charter boat operators, retailers, restaurant owners and others directly and indirectly related to the Alabama seafood industry.
