Alabama chefs have been no stranger to the Great American Seafood Cook-Off (GASCO) in New Orleans. In fact, Chef Jim Smith, executive chef of the Alabama Governor’s Mansion and current chairman of the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission (ASMC), took home the top prize in 2011.
And what better way to decide who’ll represent our state this year than a Gulf seafood cook-off of our own.
Introducing: the inaugural Alabama Seafood Cook-Off, a one-day event to determine Alabama’s 2015 GASCO representative. The competition will take place May 1 at the Southern Makers VIP event at E.A.T. South Downtown Farm in Montgomery beginning at 6:30pm.
The top four finalists will try their hand at putting an inventive and delicious spin on fresh Alabama Gulf Seafood. And they’ll seek to earn praise from a group of noteworthy judges.
Our judges panel this year includes:
- David Bancroft, owner of Acre in Auburn and Alabama’s 2014 GASCO representative
- Chris Blankenship, director of marine resources and program administrator of the ASMC
- Jim Smith, executive chef of the State of Alabama, the 2011 GASCO winner, and chairman of the ASMC
Additional judges will be announced closer to the event.
If you need more encouragement, our friend Martie Duncan, finalist on the eighth season of “Food Network Star” and the brains behind MartieKnowsParties.com, will be the featured emcee for the event.
Registration is open through April 15, and finalists will be announced April 20. For interested chefs and restaurateurs, see our rules and regulations.
