Calling All Chefs: Registration Open for 3rd Annual Alabama Seafood Cook-Off

The Alabama Seafood Cook-Off is back, and Alabama Gulf Seafood is looking for contestants to compete in the third annual event.

The 2017 Alabama Seafood Cook-Off will take place Monday, June 26 in the Heron Pointe event space at The Wharf in Orange Beach.

Submissions are due by Monday, May 8.

The winner of the event will go on to represent the state of Alabama in the 14th Annual Great American Seafood Cook-Off (GASCO) in New Orleans, Louisiana, and will be an automatic qualifier in the 2017 World Food Championships, also to be held at The Wharf, with both events scheduled for later this year.

The 2016 ASCO winner was Chef Josh Quick of Odette in Florence, AL. The 2015 ASCO winner was Chef George Reis of Ocean and 5 Point Public House Oyster Bar in Birmingham, AL. Chef Brody Olive of Voyager’s at Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, AL was the runner-up in both years.

Judges and emcee for the event are still being determined.

“I think that the Alabama Seafood Cook-off is an amazing showcase for Alabama chefs and Alabama Gulf Seafood,” said Chef Jim Smith, Chairman of the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission. “Having some of the best chefs from across the state compete with Alabama seafood as the main ingredient is such a fun way to support the seafood industry of the state.”

Competition scoring for chef teams (one lead chef plus one assistant) will be judged based on Presentation, General Impression, and Serving Methods; Creativity and Practicality; Composition and Harmony of Ingredients; Correct Preparation and Craftsmanship; and Flavor, Taste, and Texture. These same parameters will also be used to judge recipes at GASCO later this year.

“The Alabama Seafood Cook-Off at The Wharf was a great event last year,” said Chris Blankenship, Deputy Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Program Administrator for the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission. “It showcased four talented chefs in a beautiful Coastal Alabama setting. With what we learned last year, the 2017 Cook-Off will be the best yet! You don’t want to miss it.”
